Welcoming the New Year with a vision board is so exciting to me! With every year that passes we’re given a fresh start, a blank slate, and new possibilities! Throughout my late twenties and into my thirties I’ve completely changed my perspective and feelings about the New Year.

A new year use to make me feel sad because another year had gone by and my goals had not been met. However, I decided that I didn’t want to feel that way any more. So, I now embrace New Year’s with excitement for what’s ahead! One thing that helps me get excited for what’s ahead is creating a vision board. In this post, I’ll share all my tips on how to create a vision board.

Creating a Vision Board

Creating a vision board has totally changed my outlook on life! The week after Christmas I take the time to sit and ponder on the year behind me and create a plan for the year ahead of me.

Over the past serval years I’ve collected a few questions that I like to ask myself. Answering these questions allows me to know how to create my vision board and what should be on it. I’ll attach a worksheet below so you can do the same.

Vision Board Questions

How to Create a Vision Board
  • Print out the worksheet and answer the questions.
  • Decide on one word that you want to define your year. Once I’ve answered all the questions I look at my goals and think of a word that will motivate and remind me of my goals. For example, my word for this past year was consistency. I chose the word consistency because that’s what I wanted this year to look like for me. I wanted to stay consistent in small habits that I created for myself knowing that consistency compounds. John Maxwell explains this in his book, “The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth.” The more consistent I am from day to day, week to week, year to year with small habits will determine who I’ll be in the next 5 to 10 years.
  • Select a quote or scripture verse to be the mantra of your year. For example, this past year I selected the verse Hebrews 12:11-12, which fell in line with my word consistency.
  • Determine the size of your board. Since I create a vision board every year, I invested in a small cork board that I use year after year. However, if you don’t want to use a cork board then a poster board or foam board is fine too.
  • Collect pictures and prints that visually describe your goals. Look for pictures in magazines or images on the internet that inspire you to reach your goals. Now that you have your word, verse, or quote, you can now find pictures, stickers, or create post it notes that represent your goal.
  • Gather craft supplies (markers, stickers, glue, push pins, scissors, paper, post it notes ect…) It’s now time to create your vision board! Start out by glueing or pinning all your pictures and images on the board. Next, using markers or a post it note write out your word and quote and stick it to the board. Lastly, fill in the board with stickers and paper cut-outs of things that reflect your goals.
Implementing Your Vision Board

Now that your vision board is complete, hang it somewhere that you will see it everyday! Also, take a picture of it and keep it on your phone or make it your screen saver. The more you see the board the more motivated you’ll be.

I know from experience that creating a yearly vision board and setting up the year with intentions does work! It takes hard work to achieve goals, but you have to decide how bad you want what’s at the end of that goal.

Goal Setting Tips

When I set a goal I like to start by visualizing what’s at the end of that goal, then work my way backwards creating small action steps that will lead me up to the finish line.

Research and read about what you want to accomplish and see how other people have done it before you. Find books about goal setting and success then glean from them.

Final Thoughts

Life is going to pass us by with goals or no goals, but who wants to live with the regrets of “what if I would have?” So, take a chance and create a vision board for this next year and see what happens!
