Gluten Free Hamburger Mac & Cheese is a 30 minute, one pot meal. It’s a throwback family favorite that will be sure to transport you back to your childhood days of Hamburger Helper.

When I first got married I literally made this meal every weekend. My husband and I ate this recipe every single Saturday night for about a year. Now, it’s been added into the rotation of our monthly meal plan. In this grown up version of “Hamburger Helper,” I use pantry spices, grass-fed beef, and gluten free noodles.

Ingredients

The noodles that I use for this gluten free Hamburger Mac are Barilla Gluten Free Elbow Pasta. This brand of pasta holds its shape and does not clump together. Most of the gluten free pastas that are rice based tend to stick together and clump. I have not had that problem with this brand. Barilla pasta can easily be found at most major grocery store chains.

Beware of hidden forms of gluten when making this recipe from the Worcestershire sauce and beef broth. Not all brands are gluten free. Lea and Perrins Original is the brand of Worcestershire that I use and it’s also easy to find at the grocery store.

As far as the beef broth, I use my own beef bone broth that I keep in my freezer. Bone bone has so many health benefits and is very healing for the gut. If you are not familiar with how to cook bone broth then check out my step by step video here. If you want to buy a carton of broth at the grocery store, then I would recommend Pacific Organic Beef Broth. This company offers a large variety of gluten free broths and soups.

Equipment

  • 1 Instant Pot

Ingredients

  • 1 pound grass-fed ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon granulated onion
  • 1 teaspoon granulated garlic
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • dash of cayenne pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce gluten free
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 4 cups beef broth gluten free
  • 12 ounce gluten free elbow pasta
  • 8 ounce shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

  • Set Instant Pot to sauté mode and place ground beef in pot.
  • Allow to cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  • As the ground beef is cooking use a heat proof spatula to break up the beef into small pieces.
  • Once ground beef is done, add granulated onion, granulated garlic, paprika, pink salt, black pepper, and a dash of cayenne pepper to pot and mix into ground beef.
  • Allow spices to heat up and bloom for about 30 seconds until fragrant. (This adds to the flavor.)
  • Add gluten free elbow pasta to the pot and stir. Ensure that noodles are pushed down into the liquid so they cook evenly.
  • End Sauté mode on the Instant Pot.
  • Place lid on pot, turn to locked position, and set vent to sealed position.
  • Manually switch pot to "pressure cook" for 4 minutes.
  • When cooking time is complete, release pressure by turning the vent to venting position and allow steam to vent until the floating valve drops.
  • Turn lid to unlock it, and remove it from the pot.
  • Add cheese and butter to noodles and stir until melted.
